Considerations When Choosing Kids’ Eyeglasses (Part 1)

Important Kid's Eyeglasses Considerations

Children’s eyewear is not created equal. While most kids can easily slip on a pair of glasses without any problems, others may have difficulty doing so, or their vision may require something more specific than your average children’s eyeglasses. If you intend on choosing the right pair of glasses for your child, there are many things that you need to consider before making your purchase: Considerations When Choosing Kids’ Eyeglasses

The Prescription

The first thing to consider when choosing kids’ glasses for your child is the prescription. The prescription is a measurement of how strong the lens needs to be in order to correct vision issues. For example, if your child needs glasses because they have myopia (nearsightedness), then their lenses will need to be thicker around the edges and thinner in the center so that light focuses on their retina at a proper distance away from their eye. If they need glasses because they are farsighted (hyperopia), then their lenses will be thicker at the center and thinner around the edges so that light focuses on their retina at a proper distance closer than it would without glasses. Once you know what kind of vision correction your child needs, you can determine which type of frame would work best with their prescription: single-vision or bifocal frames, progressive or non-progressive lenses, single-vision or multi-focal lenses, dual focal/bifocal, trifocal, etc.

The Style of the Glasses

You also want to consider how the style of the glasses fits your child’s personality. For example, if your child has a bright and bubbly personality, they may desire fun glasses that suit their personality that feature bright colored frames or patterns. If your child is a fan of sports, he or she may want a pair of glasses that are similar to their favorite team. If your child has many interests and just can’t choose, it might be fun to find a pair that matches their favorite color or animal print. This way they can have something fashionable while still feeling like themselves when they wear them all the time! The style of your child’s glasses can be a great motivator to help ensure they enjoy wearing their glasses.

The Durability of the Glasses

As a parent, you want to make sure that your child’s glasses are durable. Children are active and often drop or damage their glasses, so ensuring durability in the glasses you purchase is very important. You also want to be able to replace the lenses if/when they get scratched up from playground sandboxes or other outdoor activities. Practicing good storage habits like ensuring your child puts their glasses in the case when not in use is a good way to help prevent potential damages.
